The German language, belonging to the Western Germanic stock, is spoken in Germany, Austria and within the German speaking part of Switzerland. Furthermore, German is widespread in some parts of European countries. Those territories enfold the French Alsace and Lorraine, Liechtenstein and Luxembourg. It is the most spoken mother tongue of the European Union and is rating as universal language due to the importance as a language in politics ans science and about 185 million native and foreign speakers. The most important external influences came form the Latin and Greek language. Numerous important words used in science, technology and everyday life are borrowed out of them. Later elements of the French language spoken in the aristocracy were integrated.

The pronunciation and written form of the German language correspond with each other in an inimitably way so that it can be almost called an ideal case.

The written form is phonetic but not straight to the sound.

German consists of 15 vowel phonemes, a relativley widespread vowel system with a frequent use of vowel pairs.

Grammatically German is an article language and distinguish itself by a high word formation ability.

German knows three genders, whereas differences between several genders appear by forming plurals.

Furthermore, German has got four cases.

German often uses auxiliaries instead of flexions.
